6 October – Tuesday Goodie Bag

Tuesday Goodie Bag

This week’s Tuesday Goodie Bag features

The Avenue Brasserie

Last month, The Avenue Brasserie opened its doors on leafy Eglantine Avenue, in the heart of South Belfast. Located in The Malone Hotel, The Avenue serves up dishes championing produce from trusted local suppliers such as exceptional beef from Hannan Meats, and fresh Kilkeel seafood.

From the selection of Irish drinks behind the bar, to the beautiful artwork from local creatives on the walls, The Avenue truly celebrates everything that our wonderful region has to offer.

We were seated at a charming table for two with great views of the tree-lined Avenue, and started with an Old Fashioned cocktail, and although we’re not usually 0% wine fans, as it’s “Sober October”, the Edenvale Sauvignon Blanc Verdejo was a pretty good non-alcoholic alternative.

There’s an excellent Sunday Set Menu, exceptional value at £35 for three courses, and from this we chose the Beetroot Tarte Tatin to start, with golden-crumbed crispy goat’s cheese and a toasted pine nut dressing, followed by a luxurious Fish Pie crammed with salmon, cod, smoked haddock, prawns, & mussels, in a mustardy white wine cream sauce, topped with swirls of cheddar mash and served with buttery greens.

The à la carte menu had some superb choices too; the Kilkeel Crab starter on toasted sourdough was fresh and zingy, with crème fraîche, chives, fennel, and a cherry tomato salad, and the Pan Roasted Halibut was moist, flaky, and served with fondant potato, wilted spinach, mussels, Madeira cream, and a vibrant herb oil.

To finish, the Lemon and Raspberry Posset with Honeycomb was fluffy and light, and the creamy Espresso Creme Brûlée had a subtle coffee hit, a crunchy sugary top, and was accompanied by Orange Biscotti for dipping.

How fantastic to see Chef Michael O’Connor bringing his thirty plus years of culinary experience back to BT9 at The Avenue Brasserie. Many thanks to Michael and his team for a delicious meal.

Blas na hÉireann – Dingle

The annual Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards celebrate & reward the best of Irish produce and the people behind it. We were delighted to go to Dingle to be part of it, & loved chatting to the producers, especially Jean-Pierre Mellor, from Cha Dodo, Ingrid Maxwell, The Mallow Maker, & Sadhbh from Krumb, who were some of the representatives from Ards & North Down. Congratulations to all the winners.
