The Practitioner

After a recent transformation, this familiar Victorian building on the corner of University Street and Botanic Avenue is now home to Queen’s Hotel, and its Practitioner bar and restaurant is launching its new food and cocktail menus this week.

We called in to try some of the new dishes, and we also got a sneak peek at some of the great cocktails launching very soon.

To begin, we had a couple of The Practioner’s excellent October Monthly Prescriptions: a Negroni-inspired “Trick”, and a “Treat” Floral Highball, with our starters of Crispy Goat’s Cheese; golden bonbons of creamy herbed cheese with honey, baked beetroot, and a sprinkling of sunflower seeds, and Portavogie Prawns with pickled tomato and hints of basil, with toasted sourdough for dipping.

We always love a meat-free main, and the crescent moon-shaped autumnal Mushroom and Lentil Pie, fragrant with thyme, and served with herb roasties and greens, was just the ticket.

And the Roast Chicken with bacon, honey roast carrots, a chasseur sauce, and the smoothest mash we’ve had in ages, was another delicious dish. But whatever you do, don’t pass up on the phenomenal Tomato Salad-a superb side dish of fresh, simply prepared marinated tomatoes, with red onions, capers, and a sprinkling of Parmesan.

Next, we had a preview of a couple more of Practitioner’s latest cocktail creations, the fruity, creamy “Gelato”, and the “Butter-Washed Old Fashioned”, with more than a hint of custard creams about it!

To finish, a wonderful Toffee Apple Crumble with ice cream and custard, just perfect comfort food for the season, and a fondant-style Chocolate Pudding: rich, oozy, and decorated with shards of golden honeycomb.

At The Practitioner, terrific dishes, inventive mixology, and a casual atmosphere all come together to make The Queen’s Hotel the ideal city spot to relax, unwind, and enjoy some great hospitality.

Drip, Belfast

The team behind Drip is passionate about great coffee, delicious food and the shared art of conversation, which has resulted in a space which facilitates all of that, and more!

We dropped by for lunch during a busy afternoon service, but we were quickly seated, and soon we were sipping Dirty Chai Lattes and enjoying two rather excellent plates.

Firstly, “Everything Eggs”; two perfectly poached eggs on top of toasted sourdough and silky smooth whipped avocado, with sweet, confit cherry tomatoes, pickled shallots, a punchy chilli oil, all sprinkled with crunchy “everything” seasoning.

We also loved the luxurious “Lobster Roll” stuffed with shellfish butter-poached lobster and Portavogie prawns, with pickled celery, accompanied by a side of matchstick fries, a dressed herbaceous salad, and a squeeze of lemon.

And Drip’s seasonal drinks and dishes are also available on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings with a carefully curated L8 Menu featuring tempting nibbles, small plates, handmade pasta, sumptuous desserts, and craft cocktails. We can’t wait to try it!
