La Taqueria

La Taqueria, on Castle Street in Belfast’s City Centre, offers dishes rooted in traditional Mexican flavours and recipes, combining quality local produce with superb Mexican ingredients.

The quality of the food is mirrored by the drinks. With a focus on artisan tequila and mezcal, there’s an extensive Margarita menu, and we love the rich, smoky Mezcal Margarita made with Ojo de Tigre-

the perfect aperitif.

We always go for the Tostada de Ceviche to start, made with cured marinated cod on a crispy corn tortilla with chipotle mayo, avocado, pickled red onion, coriander, and scallion, topped with habanero and citrus. And don’t miss out on the Guacamole “Especial” (what makes it special? We’ll be dining out on that story for a few years yet: IYKYK!)

We then ordered a couple of the veggie options; the Mushroom Birria Quesadilla with grilled oyster mushrooms inside a fried corn tortilla with cheese, coriander and spring onion, served with a side of mushroom guajillo broth, and the Coliflor Capeado- light, golden beer battered cauliflower florets, topped with crunchy shredded cabbage, crema, chipotle mayo, coriander,  scallions, and finished with a hot árbol salsa.

Accompanied by a side of Frijoles Refritos, a black bean mash with crumbly queso fresco, this was another great meal at La Taqueria, packed with delicious, authentic flavours and textures. And there’s also a sister venue on South Belfast’s Ormeau Road.

Neill’s Hill

Neill’s Hill is a Ballyhackamore foodie favourite, and it’s not difficult to see why. With its stylish yet informal vibe, serving breakfast, lunch, evening meals, and Sunday specials, this brasserie-style East Belfast institution remains as popular as ever.

We called in for lunch with the family, and  to begin we chose some small plates to share, including a Bread Board with dips, tender Fried Squid with chilli jam, sour cream & coriander, and a chunky Dressed Hummus topped with falafel and flatbread.

Neill’s Hill always has a selection of lunch specials, a snip at just £13 a plate, and from this menu we enjoyed the Mushroom, Courgette & Leek Bake in a mozzarella & tomato sauce with grilled focaccia, and the Spiced Lamb Burger with fattoush salad, fried halloumi, mint yoghurt, and spicy potato wedges.

We also ordered two of the terrific seafood dishes; the Fillet Of Salmon was served with peas and pancetta, in a roast tomato beurre blanc, topped with fried quails eggs, and the crispy Seabass was scattered with garlic Portavogie prawns, and was accompanied by mangetout and boiled potatoes on a vibrant green garlic and herb butter sauce.

And the vegetarian Harissa Spiced Aubergine was drizzled with a fruity pomegranate dressing, and served on a herby fattoush salad with squeaky fried halloumi.

Desserts at Neill’s Hill are also hard to resist; from authentic Portuguese Pasteis de Nata and creamy Pannacotta with gooseberries, to steamed Jam Sponge with custard and the phenomenally good Tunisian Orange Cake, there are plenty of sweet treats to choose from. And of course any restaurant that has a separate Cheese Menu is a definite winner in our book!

Spudos

We were intrigued to try Spudos hand-cooked crisps with Spud Dust seasoning, as seen on Dragon’s Den, so we were delighted to receive our first Spudos Crisps Kit to try at home.

Order here :-

https://spudos.com

So, how does it work? Inside the box,  the 500g resealable bag contains unseasoned, thick-cut, hand-cooked crisps, which actually tasted pretty good, unseasoned, straight out of the bag!

But when we sprinkled some Spud Dust onto the crisps in the paper bags provided, and gave them a good shake, that’s when the magic happened!

Our first two choices, Prawn Cocktail, and Pickled Gherkin, were both flavour sensations. And we’re looking forward to sampling all the others…and perhaps we might even try a combination of several flavours at once? Salt & Vinegar with Chip Shop Curry sounds like a match made in heaven!

Spud Dust is also a versatile product which isn’t just for crisps. We’ll keep some in the cupboard to shake over chips, roast potatoes, and vegetables, and it also works as a terrific seasoning for Air Fryer dishes. And all the flavours are totally plant based!

Spudos are definitely some of the best crisps we’ve ever tried; perfectly crunchy, tasty flavour options, and a sustainable, zero food-waste ethos. Also, the crisp bags, shake bags, and sachets are all compostable.
