This week’s Tuesday Goodie Bag features
Maegden, Bushmills
A visit to this cheesemongers and quality food shop had been on our bucket list for quite some time.
Based in Bushmills, Maegden has become legendary for its superb grilled cheese sandwiches, using local farmhouse cheeses from the shop counter, made using Zac’s Bakehouse sourdough, and served with pickles.
We went for the Gubbeen with Hegarty’s Cheddar, Toons Bridge fior di latte, pickled leeks, shallots, & dijon mustard. Absolutely fantastic! There’s also a great variety of sweet treats, and speciality coffee to go.
Maegden proudly supports independent, authentically artisan local producers – bakers, cheese and charcuterie makers, beekeepers, coffee roasters, and the shelves are groaning with incredible products from Ireland and further afield.
Grilled cheese is served 11am-4pm.

The Chelsea, Belfast
The Chelsea on the Lisburn Road in South Belfast is a contemporary bar & bistro, which for nearly thirty years has been serving great food and drinks seven days a week, and, as it had just launched its Autumn Menu, we popped along to try some of the latest dishes.
On the wettest day of the year, we found ourselves at a fantastic window table, watching the spectacle of folks shower-dodging with their drenched dogs, while we soaked up the cosy, convivial atmosphere of the downstairs bar, which had more than a welcoming hint of the local pub about it.
The new menu has plenty of crowd-pleasing dishes to choose from, and we started with some cracking appetisers; Sizzling Chilli & Garlic Prawns with toasted bread for dipping, and a Marinated Tomato & Mozzarella Bruschetta with basil pesto, red onions, & balsamic syrup.
We then tucked into two fantastic, mains, ideal comfort food to warm the cockles on a cold October afternoon; a Crispy Chicken Red Curry with wok fried vegetables and braised rice, and a colossal Creamy Fish Pie stuffed with fresh seafood, spinach, peas, and boiled eggs!
A contentious debate, but is a fish pie a proper fish pie without the additional egg or two? Well, we’re definitely advocates for their inclusion, so this one was right up our street. Topped with heaps of cheddar & parmesan crusted mash, and accompanied by a cherry tomato & red onion salad, this was a delicious dish.
And to finish, another delightful nod to the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, a prettily-plated Pumpkin Spiced Crème Brûlée with candied pecans & salted caramel ice cream, and an old school Strawberry Jam & Coconut Sponge Cake with lashings of smooth, creamy, custard.
The generous portions at The Chelsea guarantee that you won’t go away hungry, and this lunchtime treat was just what we needed to brace us to battle once more with the stormy weather outside. Many thanks to Beth and the team for a fabulous lunch.
