One of our favourite central Belfast eateries, Bank Square Brasserie, is a little oasis of French Bistro-style elegance right in the heart of the city.
With excellent cocktails, the BelFashioned made with McConnell’s Sherry Cask and whiskey marmalade, & Le Bijou with Gin, Vermouth, & Green Chartreuse, were fantastic aperitifs.
Bank Square’s passion for celebrating local ingredients is evident in the menu, and the vegetarian options are probably the best in Belfast.
We shared a delicious Whole Baked Camembert scented with Thyme & Honey, with Sourdough Baguette for dipping, and the Smoked Mackerel with Golden Beetroot, Apple, Radish, & Pommery Mustard Vinaigrette was light and refreshing.
For fish lovers, the Roast Coley on a bed of Creamy Mash, with Cavolo Nero and a Caper & Shrimp Beurre Noisette was an absolute dream, and the Mushroom Seitan Burger with Crispy Vegan Bacon, Mac Sauce, Gherkins, Cheese, Fries, & Salad was an excellent meat-free choice.

With its casual atmosphere, attentive service and European Bistro style menu, Bank Square Brasserie is hard to beat for quality and value in the city centre.

In collaboration with the Taste Atelier, Artur Fron, Holohan’s, on University Road in Belfast, has launched a brilliant new Monday Night Menu, and we were delighted to be invited to the launch.
The menu featured delicious dishes championing incredible Irish produce; to start, Smoked Mackerel Torte with horseradish gel & dill, Braised Beef Bon-Bon with Smoked Gubeen and potato bread, and Whipped Goats Cheese Mousse on Wheaten Bread.
The appetisers were followed by either Sweet Cure Bacon Chop with Braised Cabbage, Chive Mash, & Mushrooms in a Pepper & Madeira Sauce, or golden Breaded Cod with Roasted Fennel, Parsley Sauce, and the most incredible Lemon & Thyme Roast Potatoes: so good, we had to order an extra portion!
In addition to the regular Monday slot, further Taste Atelier “Tasting Menu Dining Experiences” have been lined up to showcase the best of Holohan’s Irish culinary fare. Check out the website for details.

What a pleasure to be staying in The Ashe Hotel in Tralee. Conveniently located just a short cycle from the beginning of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway, the hotel was perfectly situated as a base for our Kerry tandem adventures!
More than just a cool, boutique hotel with an eclectic, contemporary vibe, The Ashe features many retro design features which are a respectful nod to the past. From antique coloured glassware, to an array of vintage clocks behind reception, the hotel oozes style and taste.
This eclectic mix of furnishing styles, striking decor, and clever lighting was totally up our street, and the hotel’s popularity as a cool local meeting spot was evident from the moment we arrived.
As well as a variety of guest rooms, there are some beautiful event spaces, a restaurant, a cocktail bar, and four luxurious suites, one of which, The Derrymore, was to be our home away from home for our Kerry stay.
Perfect for a relaxing stay, this spacious suite has a comfy, super-king size bed underneath a gorgeous glass vintage chandelier. There was also a roll top, freestanding bath in the bedroom for a rejuvenating soak after a day exploring the beautiful Kerry greenway. The spacious bathroom was tiled in restful greens and beiges, and featured many amenities such as a rainfall shower and twin washstand sinks.
The restful decor of this suite was inspired by the romantic Derrymore beach, just a few miles from the hotel, which lies between the patchwork green Slieve Mish mountains and the ocean.
