🍽 Cafe Melrose

🍽 The American Bar

Our venue of the week:

🔵 The Avenue Cinema

Cafe Melrose

Open daily, Cafe Melrose on Belfast’s bustling Lisburn Road, is a terrific new cafe, roastery & bakery.

For breakfast, lunch dishes, bakes and great tea & coffee, Cafe Melrose offers quick service, a contemporary interior, and a modern, brunch-style menu.

From traditional Beef Stew and Breakfast Muffins, to Loaded Fries and Sourdough Sandwiches, there’s plenty of choice.

We were invited to try out the menu. We had the Avocado Toast with a Cherry Tomato Salad on Sourdough with perfectly poached eggs, and a veggie version of the Chorizo Hash: a stack of crispy Potato Rosti with Mushrooms, Cheese, and a Fried Egg.

And for those looking for a sweet treat, you can’t go far wrong with a moist warm chocolate Brownie with cream, or a flaky, buttery, custardy Pastel de Nata.

“More than Coffee”, Cafe Melrose is a great new addition to Lisburn Road’s flourishing cafe culture scene.

The American Bar

Renowned for music & comedy gigs, quiz nights, sports, theatre, and great drinks and grub, the American Bar in Sailortown dates back to the 1860s.

Historically the pub would have been frequented by dockers, carters and riveters, but now is home to an eclectic mix of regulars and visitors who can relax and enjoy some terrific refreshment and entertainment.

Bar food is served by the rather brilliant Justin and Elena aka The Grateful Bread. We ordered some oozy Gubbeen Fritters with hot honey, a plate of Salt Cod Croquetas with fries, and a tasty plant-based Falafel Mezze Platter.

There are also plenty of other tempting light bites like Calamari, & Grilled Cheese toasties, or heartier fare such as Battered Fish & Chips and Beef Birria Tacos. The American Bar: a brilliant spot for a pint, a plate and some great craic.

The Avenue Cinema

We were delighted to have been invited to The Avenue Cinema for a “Not Guilty Zero” wine  tasting event, and a screening of the new comedy movie “Wicked Little Letters”.

This was our first visit to The Avenue and we were thoroughly impressed.

From the plush seating area in the foyer, featuring atmospheric lighting and retro decor to create a luxurious ambiance, to the full bar and food menu available before, after and during the movie, the Avenue oozes an air of sophistication.

The seating in each screen is incredibly comfortable with single seats and sofas for two, with tables to accommodate drinks and food from the menu which includes cinema favourites such as popcorn and nachos, and more substantial dishes like pizza, burgers and hot dogs.

For an experience which rekindles the golden age of Belfast cinema, when trips to the “pictures” were a special occasion, The Avenue pays homage to the historic picture house of the same name, that once stood in this very location. We can’t wait to go back!
