WB’s Coffee House

Since 2014, Aisling Kelly Hunter’s WB’s Coffee House on Stephen Street, Sligo, has been an award winning cafĆ© in the heart of the town, and is also the home of the Sligo Oyster Experience .

WB’s Coffee House is suitably located next to the famous W.B. Yeats Statue, and serves up a great selection of food and drink, from breakfasts and lunches, to soups, sandwiches, and sweet treats. And there are some lovely gift ideas available in-store.

Also, Aisling is an active member of the Sligo Food Trail and we took away some yummy Sligo Picnic goodies from WB’s to enjoy. This new collaboration between Sligo Food Trail and Visit Sligo encourages visitors and locals alike to savour the very best food and drink while exploring the county’s fabulous scenery.

From cafĆ©s and hotels, to restaurants and artisan producers, members of the Sligo Food Trail have created premium picnic experiences, perfect for seashore strolls, countryside walks, or even, as we did, in the town itself!

Our picnic included spicy chicken wraps, vegan sausage rolls, chocolate banana bread, protein balls, and granola pots.

The Sligo Picnic reflects the Council’s commitment to the growing food tourism industry in the area, and gives visitors the opportunity to discover delicious local flavours combining taste, place, and community.

Gnostic

n the heart of Sailortown, facing the Harbour Commissioner’s Office in Belfast, Gnostic Bar and Restaurant offers a cozy, intimate venue serving up terrific food and excellent cocktails.

We called in on a Sunday afternoon, and although all the tables were fully booked, we were invited to sit at the bar, which was perfectly suited to the ā€œSmall Platesā€ style of dining.

The Squid in spicy Gochujang with crumbled black pudding, carrots, lime crema, and sesame, was sweet, sticky and delicious, and the Tempura Broccoli Tacos had a ponzu glaze, with warming heat from the wasabi mayo.

The Fried Tofu Sliders were a great meat-free option, with barbecue sauce, red cabbage, crispy onions, and zingy lime, and we also loved the melty Filo Feta Parcels dripping with truffle and oregano honey, and the chips with confit garlic mayo.

With the French doors flung open to make the most of the early summer sunshine, dining from a brilliant menu with fresh modern takes on pub favourites, and soaking up the informal, cosmopolitan vibe, Gnostic was the perfect spot to enjoy a lazy Sunday lunchtime treat.

Barberstown Castle

This year we were honoured to be invited again to participate in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Kildare in the name of men’s health!

Each year, thousands of motorcyclists dress in their finest clothes and ride their classic styled motorcycles for two of the largest causes in the world, prostate cancer and men’s mental health, fundraising for Movember. Here’s to fifteen years of dapper!

The event was held at Barberstown Castle, a 4 star Country House & Historic 13th Century Castle in the village of Straffan, Co. Kildare. The Castle has been beautifully and sympathetically upgraded and we were staying in the classically styled Barton Suite with its wonderful views over the lovely gardens.

In the evening, we experienced a fantastic meal in the Garden Suite Restaurant and Bar, and this recently refurbished space, with its opulent decor in rich florals, greens and golds, has a delicious new menu.

We absolutely loved the Fish Board with salmon rillette, fried calamari, prawn cocktail, and garlic sauce, served with brown bread, and the Blue Cheese and Poached Pear Salad with beetroot, candied pecans, and a beetroot glaze.

For mains, the Pan-fried Catch of the Day was a crispy skinned sea bass with pickled fennel and a silky potato

purĆ©e, in an orange and tarragon white sauce, and the Free-range Chicken Supreme, with creamy chorizo & pea orzo pasta, was served with seasonal garden vegetables and a roast pepper and tomato veloutĆ©.

Offering superb food and drinks, the  Garden Suite at Barberstown Castle is the perfect venue to enjoy a terrific meal, where inspiration is drawn from Ireland’s fresh, seasonal, local produce, and its rich culinary heritage.
