Il Pirata

We love Il Pirata in East Belfast for the authentic, rustic, Italian-style dishes, and when we visit, we always choose a few Cichetti to share. There are some terrific dishes on the menu which must get a mention; the Braised Beef Arancini and the Carbonara Tartlets are delicious mouthfuls of flavour, the Cod Baccala is fresh and zingy, and the Caramel Poached Pear is stuffed with tangy Gorgonzola.

Il Pirata is renowned for its fresh pasta, and the Squid Ink Linguini is packed with fresh seafood and has a kick of chilli heat, and from the mains section, the Grilled Cod on a Lentil & Pancetta Ragu is a lovely, light fish dish.

We thoroughly enjoyed yet another great evening at this popular Ballyhack eatery.

No. 36 Belmont Road is always a popular spot for breakfast, lunch or afternoon coffee, and it’s not hard to see why. A terrific menu with both traditional and contemporary food and drink options which suit any dietary requirements.

Our brunch choices today included The Mighty Breakfast Roll packed with sausage, bacon, egg, rocket and scrumptious Ballymaloe Relish, the Veggie Belgian Waffles with halloumi fries, egg, maple syrup and a chilli kick from Frank’s Hot Sauce, and the American Breakfast- a towering stack of homemade buttermilk pancakes with crispy bacon, hash browns, maple syrup and fried egg.

Whitewater Brewery

https://whitewaterbrewery.com/

Whitewater Brewery, set amidst the majestically beautiful Mourne Mountains in County Down, is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Kerry and Bernard Sloan.

With family, heritage, and local community right at its core, Whitewater is a working brewery that gives visitors a special opportunity to get into the heart of a craft brewhouse.

On our recent visit, we were impressed by the collection of highest quality, multi-award-winning craft beers that take their names from local folklore and landmarks, and we learned about the fascinating history of the Whitewater Brewery and the whole brewing, bottling & canning process. We then enjoyed a beer tasting in the Whitewater Tap House.

Whitewater has some exciting new products; a range of refreshingly fruity Hard Seltzers, all gluten free, vegan, with no preservatives, and only 84 calories per can. The brewery will also soon be launching three of the most popular products in nitro cans for that perfect creamy head.

Another new experience is the opportunity to get “hands on” in the Wee Brew School, a purpose built 100L brew plant. You’ll be guided through the brewing process from the mash-in to the boiling of the hops; to hear, smell, and experience the ancient art of brewing, chat as you work hearing stories gathered over the last 25 years.

Once the beer is happily boiling you change hats (or in this case aprons) to become a pizza chef. The dough is made at Whitewater with their very own brewing yeast. Hand stretch your base and top with locally produced mozzarella from an artisan cheese producer.

Soon the brew calls again and it’s back to school. Once the final stages are complete and your brewing day is drawing to an end, it’s time to sit down, relax and enjoy a tasting session featuring 6 of Whitewater’s award-winning beers, get presented with your Wee Brew Certificate along with 5 bottled beers of your choice from Whitewater’s collection and a Whitewater branded glass as a souvenir. Booking is available on their website.
