Oliver’s Restaurant, Newtownards Road

Oliver’s on the Newtownards Road has always brought a touch of European café culture to East Belfast, and it is the perfect spot for al fresco dining (even midwinter due to the provision of patio heaters), or a cosy meal in the main restaurant.

We called in for a pre-Christmas lunch, and spent a lovely afternoon with friends enjoying some of the excellent dishes from Oliver’s Christmas Menu.

We started with a few cocktails- the Margarita was a traditionally spot-on combination of salt and citrus, and the Parma 75 was Parma Violets in a glass! We chose a couple of starters-the Beetroot and Gin Cured Salmon With Celeriac Remoulade, Pickled Cucumber & English Muffin which was light and refreshing, and the Bang Bang Prawn Tacos With Coriander Slaw, Avocado, Lime & Chilli Crema were great value, and ideal for sharing.

To follow, the Roast Fennel Risotto topped with Fried Pea Croquettes & Whipped Goat’s Curd was perfect winter comfort food, and the Sweet Potato & Mushroom Pie with Fried Sprouts, Seasonal Sides & Parsley Sauce was an excellent veggie Christmas main alternative. For fish lovers, the Pan Fried Salmon with Roast Miso Corn, Charred Bok Choi, Soba Noodles & Ponzu dressing is an Asian delight.

All washed down with a dark, plummy Primitivo-an absolute steal at £19 a bottle-this was a welcome escape from the Christmas hustle and bustle, with great food and attentive service.
