Recently refurbished to create a highly elegant & comfortably stylish vibe, the Avoca hotel in Newcastle, Co Down, is situated at the foot of the Mournes, with stunning views of the Irish Sea. The boutique Seaview Rooms are decorated in a contemporary style with a king-size bed, a seating area to enjoy the views of the promenade, and all the amenities needed for a relaxing stay.
The Avoca’s Bar & Restaurant features a great menu offering a wide variety of delicious food and drink options to suit all tastes. We started with a fabulous Hickory Smoked Old Fashioned, one of the many cocktails available from expert mixologist Bex.

We began our meal with a seafood starter of Moules Marinière: a generous portion of meaty mussels cooked in garlic, cream, & parsley, and ciabatta to mop up the sauce, with a Cheesy Garlic Pizza Bread.
This was followed by an oven-baked Neapolitan style Calzone, stuffed with a selection of vegetables to create a meat-free version with a Caesar Salad, and a perfectly Poached Fillet of Haddock on a bed of champ drizzled with wholegrain mustard and lemon cream.

We finished our evening with two more cleverly crafted cocktails; a pineapple-based Pacific Negroni, and a Hinch of Orange with a tang of marmalade.
There’s also live music every weekend in the quirky yet traditional Wild Hare Bar, and a beer garden for a spot of al fresco refreshment.
The Avoca Hotel is open daily from 8:00 am for tea & coffee, with delicious homemade scones, traybakes and croissants, and a terrific breakfast menu is also available. We were impressed with the continental breakfast options, with juices, fruit, Killowen yogurts, pastries and breads, meats and cheese, and an excellent a la carte cooked breakfast menu. We opted for the Pancake Stack with crispy bacon and maple syrup, and a fantastic Veggie Fry, with meat-free sausages, beans, mushrooms, hash browns, grilled tomatoes, potato & soda bread, all washed down with tea and coffee. What a wonderful start to set us up for a day exploring the local beauty spots.

The Avoca has some amazing special offers, wine & dine packages, and gift vouchers available in the run up to Christmas, perfect for a festive treat for that special someone.
