Fitzwillam Belfast

What a treat to have been invited to The Fitzwilliam Hotel to enjoy head chef Dean Butler’s fantastic new menu. Working closely with local suppliers, Dean has created delicious dishes showcasing the highest quality ingredients.

After a champagne reception, we were seated in the gorgeous private dining room, to enjoy six fabulous courses. Starting with a pillowy Sourdough Fougasse, flavoured with Parmesan & Garlic, the meal continued with a Traditional Organic Scotch Egg with Homemade Brown Sauce, or a Pear, Candied Walnut, Rocket & Cashel Blue salad for vegetarians. 

We loved the Grilled North Atlantic King Prawns with Garlic, Chilli, Chorizo, & Focaccia, and the main event, a 28 day aged Northern Irish Fillet Steak with Pomme Anna Fries, Parmesan, Truffle, Buttered Heritage Carrots & Homegrown Thyme was cooked to perfection. The pescatarian option was also excellent; a crispy-skinned Grilled Seabass on Saffron Risotto with leeks. 

Dessert was a moist Warm Chocolate & Hazelnut Brownie, with Vanilla Ice Cream, and a Selection of Irish Artisan Cheese with Frozen Grapes, Quince Jelly, & Crackers

Accompanied by fine wines, great cocktails, and wonderful company, this was a delightful evening highlighting the excellent hospitality and terrific new menu at The Fitzwilliam, Belfast.

Bull & Claw Portaferry

On The Strand in Portaferry, combining traditional and contemporary dining, The Bull & Claw serves great food, perfect pints, and fine wines, with an extensive gin list and terrific cocktails.

We called in to enjoy a delicious lunch, starting with a rich, earthy Mushroom & Artichoke Soup with Parsley & Scallion Oil & a  Mini Wheaten Loaf, along with some Proper Sourdough Co.’s delicious bread. 

We then enjoyed an “amuse bouche” of fresh Scampi, before our main course of Fish Pie wrapped in a golden flaky pastry with Pea Puree, Peas, Scallions, Parsley & Chunky Chips.

Finally, a moreish Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream. 

The Bull & Claw delivers quality and freshness using the best local produce & carefully sourced ingredients, and is the ideal venue to enjoy a delicious meal deal when visiting any of the forthcoming events as part of the first Feel Good Festival at the historic Portico of Ards in Portaferry, from 1–10 March

Paula McIntyre RUM

We’re big fans of Celebrity chef Paula McIntyre’s delicious gin, developed with Giant’s Basalt Rock distillery in Bushmills, and this winter she has launched her own rum brand, in conjunction with the distillery, based on locally sourced herbs, botanicals and honey.

With hints of Irish gorse, meadow sweet, and lemon verbena, the rum features honey from the Mournes, & County Antrim blackberries.

We used Paula’s rum to make a Smoked Rum Old Fashioned, with honey instead of sugar, orange bitters and a twist of orange to garnish.
