To say that Daft Eddy’s provides picture perfect views to enjoy with great food in comfortable, casual, surroundings is probably an understatement. This family-owned restaurant, on an island beside the medieval ruins of Sketrick Castle, serves contemporary, crowd-pleasing dishes from a menu designed to utilise quality local and seasonal produce, in a dining room which makes the most of the picturesque scenery.
We were seated at a fantastic corner table for two, and although it took us some time to stop gazing out the window at the beautiful vista, eventually we ordered some wine, a citrusy Spanish Bodegas Sanz Classico Verdejo, Rueda, and a sharing starter; a delicious, volcanically bubbling, Baked Cooleeney, fragrant with rosemary, white wine, and garlic, with toasted bread for scooping up the cheesy lava.
To follow, the Special of the Day was a Lemon & Pepper Breaded Sole; delicate fillets of flaky white fish, lightly dusted and fried to a perfect golden crunch, with rocket salad and dollops of curried mayonnaise, and we also loved the Panfried Seabass on tomato salsa, with a spicy Mojo Rojo sauce, and confit fennel for a subtle aniseed hit.
Our server then informed us that, “the last Chocolate Fondant was still available”, and of course, skilled upselling always works a treat! And it had our names written all over it: warm, oozy, and decadent….the fondant, not us! We also had a rather large slice of Daft Eddy’s creamy, sugary, light-as-a-feather Strawberry Pavlova.
With a whisky nightcap in hand, darkness started to fall across the bay, and we stayed just a little bit long
