This week’s Tuesday Goodie Bag features
Coppi
Many congratulations to Coppi for winning Restaurant of the Year in the Ulster Tatler awards. On our recent visit, we had some antipasti to share; Gnocco Fritto topped with caramelised Fig, Whipped Gorgonzola & Honey, Roast Beetroot on Burrata, Feta Fritters & Truffle Honey, Focaccia with Datterini Tomatoes on Whipped Ricotta, & Portavogie Prawns in Confit Garlic Butter with Sourdough. We also loved the Kilkeel Crab Risotto, & the Hispi Cabbage with a Burnt Chilli Butter.

Capparelli at The Mill
Serving delicious dishes inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean, Capparelli at the Mill has been a runaway success since opening just over a year ago, and what a year it’s been! Winning best newcomer in the Irish Restaurant Awards, and making no.14 in the Sunday Times Ireland 100 best Irish restaurants list, Capparelli has gone from strength to strength. So we couldn’t wait to return for a special lunchtime treat.

Starting with some excellent cocktails, a refreshing Mezcal Paloma, a spicy Watermelon Jalapeño Margarita, an alcohol free Raspberry Mojito, and a rich, boozy Coffee Negroni, we enjoyed a fabulous selection of snacks and small plates, ideal for sharing.
Our appetisers included Mixed Olives, Spiced Nuts, silky smooth Hummus with crunchy chickpeas, preserved lemon, nigella seeds, and sourdough, and a sweet and savoury Kale Borani Labneh, with pickled golden raisins, and vadouvan brown butter.
We also had a creamy, fresh ball of Burrata, zingy with melon, tomato, olives, and mint, in a chilli & lime vinaigrette, and dainty Salt Cod Fritters on a vibrant red pepper sauce, with pickled chilli and saffron.
This was followed by moist, flaky, Pan Roasted Hake on a bed of classic Italian peperonata with cavolo nero, and a quenelle of olive & caper butter, earthy Shawarma Spiced Rotisserie Chicken on a tangy green goddess dressing with crispy new potatoes and a jus gras, and a Bavette Steak served with braised onion, beef jus, tarragon butter, and chunky chips.
And to finish, the lightly burnt Lemon Basque Cheesecake with strawberries, the creamy traditional Tiramisu, and the Double Espresso Affogatto accompanied by Almond Biscotti & Vanilla Ice Cream, made for a wonderfully satisfying finale to this terrific lunch.
Many thanks to Chef Carlos, Lucie, and the team at Capparelli at the Mill, for making our celebratory meal so memorable. What a simply stunning venue in which to enjoy superb dishes in this delightful water mill setting on the outskirts of Dundonald.

Queen’s Hotel, Belfast
Earlier this summer, we called into Queen’s Hotel, in the heart of Belfast’s Queen’s Quarter, for some lunch and drinks on its sunny terrace.
This familiar Victorian building on the corner of University Street and Botanic Avenue has recently been updated and transformed into a brilliant new hospitality venue.
Part of The Warren Group, a growing collection of boutique resorts and dining destinations across Northern Ireland, Queen’s Hotel is a relaxed base from which to enjoy everything this buzzing and vibrant area has to offer. It’s conveniently located near the University, Botanic Gardens, and Lyric Theatre, and we couldn’t wait to return and enjoy an overnight stay.
The spacious, contemporary rooms are tastefully decorated, and ours featured accents of warm browns and cobalt blues, with beautiful, white, louvred shutters at the windows which afforded a fantastic view of Botanic Avenue.
We also loved the retro carpet design which perfectly complemented the choice of artwork and overall colour palette throughout, and the room included all the amenities you’d expect from a modern urban retreat.
The hotel’s Practitioner Bar and Restaurant serves fantastic small plates and main courses by chef Artur Fron, renowned for his incredible Street Food Atelier menus, and there’s an optional breakfast available.
And as well as overnight stays, Queen’s Hotel can also provide a boutique setting for intimate weddings, special occasions, and relaxed receptions, with flexible packages to suit all budgets, right in the heart of the city.
