Belfast’s first working distillery in almost 90 years will, in April, become another important attraction on the Titanic site within walking distance of the spectacular Titanic Building, a world recognised tourism attraction, and the Nomadic tender which ferried passengers to the liner.
All distillery equipment and the new internal mezzanine floors are supported by a floating structure within the pump-house avoiding any harmful intrusive work to the fabric of the listed building. All pump equipment and associated internal historical features have been retained and are available to view as part of the four different visitor tours, details below and on the Titanic Distillers website.
Visitors to Thompson Dock and Pump-house will clock in, as workers did a century ago, to experience the workings of the distillery, become immersed in stories of Thompson Dock’s rich heritage, and learn about Belfast’s whiskey tradition, why it disappeared and how it has returned to the home of Titanic Distillers. We’d like to thank Johnny, our tour guide, who was informed, entertaining, and personable.
The tour culminates in a tasting of Titanic’s Premium Irish Vodka and Premium Irish Whiskey. This blended Whiskey which carries ‘Built in Belfast’ on its label in memory of the ill-fated luxury liner, features light, sweet vanilla notes of Irish grain whiskeys, with the rich, deep, spice of triple-distilled malts. To round everything off there’s a hint of peat smoke and a long, lingering finish. We also learned from Diane and Peter that there are exciting plans ahead for some “water-based” experiences from the distillery-watch this space!
