On Portobello Road, nestled between the ubiquitous antique shops and bric-a-brac vendors, Gold is a brilliant neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Notting Hill.
A striking monochromatic exterior contrasts with its delightful bar and restaurant, extending into a bright, airy conservatory area resplendent with trees, plants and a great view of the open kitchen.
The menu features generous, seasonal plates cooked in wood ovens and designed for sharing: the focus is very much on top seasonal ingredients, simply prepared, resulting in wood-roasted, charred and slow cooked deliciousness.
There’s also a great contemporary drinks list, from which we ordered some fantastic cocktails; “House on Fire” with Ojo de Dios Mezcal, “Banana Old Fashioned” with Ron Santiago de Cuba 8 year, and “Thalassa” with Tanqueray, Aperol, and Mastika.
Dishes are served when ready, so it wasn’t long before we were enjoying a zingy Seatrout Ceviche, sprinkled with warming grated horseradish, and a refreshing Salad of Fennel, with blood orange, taggiasche olives, and frisée.
We then had a wonderful selection of plates from the phenomenal “Vegetables” section of the menu; Chargrilled Polenta with Gorgonzola and speck, Chargrilled Hispi Cabbage with bagna cauda, Wood Roasted Blue Anneliese Potatoes with chimichurri aioli, Jerusalem Artichokes with salsa verde, Chargrilled King Oyster Mushroom in rosemary and miso butter, and Wood Roasted Leeks with fonduta & pangrattato.
Next, a seasonal pasta special of Cima di Rapa & Ricotta Ravioli, glistening with sage butter, and a wood roasted Half Free Range Chicken in spicy nduja, tomato and Parma ham, with toast.
All washed down with a bottle of delicious French red, this was an exceptional lunch in this stunning Notting Hill restaurant: gold standard food, drink and service.
