Originally established in the 19th century as an old coaching inn, the award winning Poachers Pocket just outside Comber offers modern Irish pub food using the finest locally sourced seasonal produce.
The restaurant balances modern comfort with traditional charm, and this fusion of old and new is reflected in the menu. We called recently and enjoyed an excellent lunch; home baked breads to start, with Guinness wheaten, focaccia, black olive tapenade & salted butter, then crispy hand shelled Portavogie scampi with mushy peas, tartar sauce, dressed salad, & triple cooked chips, a venison Shepherd’s pie with cheesy mash, & root vegetables, and Chicken supreme with Pernod onion & sage risotto, & a crispy chicken croquette.
And on the way out, we popped into the Poacher’s Pantry. Open every day from 9am–9pm, this brilliant little deli sells freshly baked goodies, takeaway coffee, heat at home dishes and some great wines & spirits. We couldn’t resist a freshly baked sourdough loaf, some of their delicious tapenade, and a bottle of our favourite Broighter Gold Thai inspired rapeseed oil.
