The Ivy, Belfast – February 2025

The Ivy Belfast

The write-up you’ve been waiting for . . .

The Ivy: it’s an iconic brand, but so far, the Belfast Brasserie has been getting mixed reviews. We were keen to visit, and find out for ourselves, so we booked a table for four on a recent Sunday evening.

The restaurant was absolutely buzzing, with a very sophisticated cosmopolitan vibe. Stunning interiors, beautifully set tables, atmospheric lighting, and extremely attentive service all made an excellent first impression.

Starters were a little on the pricey side, but shouldn’t be skipped-they were probably the highlight of our meal. The Salt and Pepper Squid Tempura was tender and flavourful, the twice-baked Dromona Cheddar Cheese Soufflé was light and creamy, the Robata Chicken Skewers had a spicy bang bang peanut sauce for dipping, and the  Buffalo Mozzarella was served with quince purée and a drizzle of truffle honey.

However there are some tasty snacks on the menu, which are great value for money and would also make terrific starters, including Zucchini Fritti and Truffle Arancini.

The main courses were also good, and we enjoyed the The Ivy Cheeseburger in a toasted brioche roll with aged Dromona Irish Cheddar and thick cut chips, the Blackened Cod Fillet with a yuzu and herb sauce, and the Pan-Fried Fillet of Sea Bass on creamed colcannon with samphire.

Another standout dish was the dramatically delicious dessert, the Apple Tart Fine. A pretty, delicate tart, which wouldn’t look out of place in a fine French patisserie, topped with Draynes Farm vanilla ice cream, and flambéed in Calvados at the table. Absolutely perfect.

To sum up, while there’s certainly better food available in the city centre for less, The Ivy Belfast as an overall experience didn’t disappoint.
